Newborn Finn {Seattle Newborn Photography}

Lots of newborn babies, lately! Especially boys. I met Finn, Kathryn, and Steve on Friday to photograph them on Finn’s eighth day in this world. Kathryn is Scottish and I could have listened to her talk all day long. I didn’t get to, though, because sweet Finn rocked his session and we finished relatively quickly. I’ve never had a newborn fall into such a deep sleep so quickly, but wow, that made my job so much easier.

When I arrived Finn was awake and alert, so we did some more interactive shots to take advantage of those wide open eyes. Doesn’t he look older than a newborn here? Especially in the shot with all three of them and Finn is semi-smiling and posing. What a gorgeous family!

We went upstairs to investigate the light in their bedrooms. I love when we can use a bed in the session. I sneaked the shot on the top right while Kathryn and Steve were playing with Finn, and it is one of my favorites. Those paintings behind them on the wall are of scenes in Glasgow. I’m also in serious love with the shot of Finn alone on the bed.

Once we wore him out with those bed shots, Finn was ready to sleep. I usually wait a while for baby to get into a deep sleep before starting to pose, but Finn was OUT. We took a few shots in one of Trevor’s creations. I love the yellow and gray together.

And a couple without the hat. I think Finn is going to have red hair like his mama. He’s also got long, long, blondish lashes.

Finn threw quite a few smiles at us during the session. He looks so happy here in daddy’s hands.

A coworker made Finn this beautiful blanket. I love the colors and fabrics she chose. Kathryn got Finn dressed in his first real outfit in preparation for doing some outside photos. Finn wasn’t so thrilled to be woken up, but Steve is a Happiest Baby on the Block pro already. Lots of shushing and head jiggling (If you are a new parent and haven’t read the book or watched the DVD, please DO! It’s such a miracle how babies respond to these techniques.). Sometimes I feel bad for dads because they feel a little out of their realm and helpless with a newborn. I mean, really, they pretty much just want to eat all the time and that’s usually mama’s department. But it seemed like Steve has really stepped up and learned how he can soothe Finn. Good job, Steve! (Sorry for the tangent there.) Finally we went outside for a few shots. I don’t know what kind of tree this is, but it is gorgeous and made a fun backdrop for a family shot.

Kathryn and Steve, you have a beautiful little guy. Thanks for inviting me into your home and sharing him with me for a little bit. Congratulations!

[...] It’s incredible what a difference a year makes. Here’s a link to Finn’s newborn session. You can still see a hint of that sleepy babe, even though Finn was wide awake and ready for action [...]
