As a professional photographer, you'd think that I have oceans of pictures of my family. But as I was putting together our yearly photo books last December, I realized that was not the case. Yes, I had lots of photo sessions of my kids, but I didn't have snapshots or images of our regular lives.
Around the same time, a photographer I follow and admire, Lyndsay Stradtner, of Life in Motion Photography, posted that she would be doing a photo a day of her family for a year. It wasn't the first time I'd heard of a project like this, but I wouldn't usually give it a second thought, since follow-through isn't always my strong point. The thought of the book of memories I'd have at the end of the year is what swayed me. What a gift for my children to have an entire year in photos! What a gift for me!
So that's what I'm doing. A photo a day for a year. I'm allowing myself plenty of grace to get through this. The photos won't be perfect. They'll likely include lots of bed head, dishes in the sink, clutter on the tables, and crusty faces. But they'll be real and full of love. They'll be the moments I would have forgotten a few years down the road if I hadn't done this. And if seeing my imperfect photos of our real lives inspires you to take more photos of your family, all the better!
The kids spent some time outside with the girls today. Here you see Wally and Chip having a little conversation. The big news in the coop is that Teri is done with her broody phase.
Abby came home from her grandparents’ house with a giant pad of paper and a giant pencil. She then asked each of us to draw ourselves. First mama, then daddy, then Abby, and finally Wally.
Wally hasn’t been wanting to sit in his high chair lately, so we’ve been letting him sit up at the counter next to Abby. Today we had tuna sandwiches and tomato soup. Abby helped Wally eat his soup. With each bite she’d open her mouth and say, “Aaauumph!” I don’t know where she got that.
Abigail’s preschool class had a field trip to a gymnastics class today (hence the nametag) and afterward we went over to Kelly’s house for some lunch. Strawberries, blueberries, and bagels.
After a rough night, Trevor and the kids let me sleep in this morning. And sleep. And sleep. When I finally got up (10:30!) I found them in the playroom. Abby had her project jar out and was making cards for people. Wally, dear boy, was putting things back in the jar. I love me...
While Trevor and Lance worked in the shop, Abby rode her tricycle on the patio. It has been at least a couple of months since she has ridden, so I was amazed at how fast she went and how much control she had. I also love her riding outfit: purple striped pajamas, polka dotted rainboots,...
After a walk in the rain to go get flour and salt, Abby and Wally and I came home and made the dough for our soft pretzels. Kelly, Naomi, and Peter came over and brought lunch while the dough rose, and then we cleared off the island, spread flour everywhere, and let the girls make...
Abby and Josie spent the last hour of their play date out in the rain. The mamas got to talk and the girls explored and played with sticks and checked on the chickens. It was heaven. At one point we peeked out and saw them sitting on the deck, holding their sticks, calmly waiting for...
My dad made Abby this wooden rocking-boat for Christmas 2009. Wally and Abby both love it and spent some time this afternoon climbing in, rocking, climbing out, climbing in backward, standing up, falling down, falling out, etc.
After a busy morning with preschool, play date, and post office, I finally got Wally stripped down and ready for his nap. Before I swaddled him, I went out to the car to get my camera. I had brought it to school thinking I might snap a couple there (did I? no.). As I headed...
Wally is the one member of our family who, so far, doesn’t really care for Starbucks. Sure, every once in a while he’ll take a drink of Abby’s steamed milk, but mostly he’ll push it away with disdain. (I think he thinks it’s a poor substitute for mama.) Apparently today he thought he’d give the...
